Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. – 2 Corinthians 9:7
Giving is probably one of the most difficult things for humans to do, and much more genuine giving is scarcer to find. The Bible however teaches us the way of God. When God gives, he does not do so from a point of duress or coercion. He is God and exhibits his Sovereignty so that every decision he makes is intentional. When he gives, he does so with all of his heart.
This is what God wants from us even as believers. He wants us to show that character of understanding, and live from that realm.
When we understand why we are giving, then it becomes easy to give without compulsion. This verse shows that we have a will, but God hopes that we have come to the maturity of making the right choices.
God loves a cheerful giver. It is not giving that God is totally interested in, but the quality of cheer that comes with it. It shows that person has come to maturity and can now also represent God on this earth; this is what pleases God.
Lord, You are the great giver. You gave your only begotten Son so that we may have salvation.
You have said that there is no greater joy than to give. I want to be a cheerful giver. When I look around and see others who are suffering and I have enough, All I want to say is thank you Lord for blessing me. Help me to take these blessings and make a difference in others’ loves. Help me give freely and gratefully. You can take what I give and multiply it many times over so that those that receive may also be able to give cheerfully to others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
