A SPIRITUAL THOUGHT ON DOGS
Although there was no clear instruction from God regarding keeping dogs as pets or whether they are clean or unclean (while Leviticus 11:27 tells us that animals with paws are unclean for food), we notice that the Bible’s mention of dogs was often derogatory and insulting. We see this in Revelation 22:15: “Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.”
Revelation 22:15 and Isaiah 56:10 “His watchmen are blind. They are all without knowledge. They are all mute dogs. They can’t bark— dreaming, lying down, loving to slumber. The dogs have a mighty appetite; they never have enough. But they are shepherds who have no understanding; they have all turned to their own way, each to his own gain, one and all.”
However, the Bible also talks of the alertness they portray as a desirable trait. Judges 7:5: “So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, ‘Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.'”
A second characteristic is the healing property of their saliva. Here we see that with the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. While people interpret dogs licking his wounds as a sign of abject poverty, it is a mercy act on the dogs’ part, soothing and nursing, not biting these wounds. Luke 16:19-21: “Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day. A certain beggar, named Lazarus, was taken to his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Yes, even the dogs came and licked his sores.”
Therefore, as Christians, there’s also good to learn from a dog’s compassion and loyalty.
