Bible Verses About Lambs

Sheep have a long, rich history in storytelling and religious symbolism. But for Christians, the lamb is not just a meat-based animal. It also refers to Jesus Christ, the son of God. The lamb that Jesus became means he was prepared to sacrifice his life at God’s will. It shows how Jesus never held back in doing what he was called to do when people sinned against God.

The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29

Jesus Himself called us Lambs in John 21:15. Let’s take a look at some of the characteristics of Lambs that make them unique. Why did Jesus refer to us as lambs?

  1. There are few things in this world that are as cute as a newborn lamb. But they grow old. A new believer is expected to grow up into maturity just as a lamb grows. A Christian is not expected to be a baby forever. We are not to desire milk forever, out of principle we should desire the meats and potatoes of God’s Word that we may grow up. Every believer needs to feed on God’s word in order to grow up like the Lord wants us to.
  2. Lambs are gentle and gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit. This doesn’t mean we’re weak or cowardly, but it takes strength of character. When I’m being gentle, it’s because I have the strength of character; I am being the person God wants me to be.
  3. When you look at a lamb you can’t help but see innocence. This innocence reminds us of the innocence of a child and Jesus said that we must be pure and innocent as little children to enter into His Kingdom.
