Bible Verses About Sand

The word “sand” is mentioned several times throughout scripture. In most cases, it is used as a metaphor for a vast amount of something – an uncountable number. In Genesis, God says to Abraham, “I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore.”

If you have ever seen the seashore, you know how impossible it would be to count every grain of sand. It’s infinite, an uncountable number. This was God’s way of telling Abraham that He was about to do something miraculous.

This theme shows up many more times in the Bible. In Psalm 139:18, David says, “If I would count them, they are more in number than the sand. When I wake up, I am still with you.”

Habbakuk 2:14, though not mentioning sand, uses the concept of water in a similar way: “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.”

God’s majesty is just as vast as the sand on the shore. It is just as endless as the sea. And that should move us to worship Him. On the whole, people tend to worship what they believe is above them. Time and time again, God has shown us that what He has planned for mankind is far beyond what our minds can fathom. He is infinitely good and infinitely wise. As a result, we trust our lives to Him. And we give Him the glory He rightfully deserves.
