How to Discern God’s Voice

Sharing is caring!

At times it is hard to differentiate God’s voice from the enemies or our own voice. This is more so in seasons when we are waiting upon the Lord.  We may think that it is the Lord who is leading us when it is our own voice or the enemy trying to confuse us.

The Bible tells us to test every spirit.  Not every voice that you hear is from God.  We are in a battle, and that means that the devil can imitate God’s voice so that he can mislead you.  You need to be careful. (1 John 4:1)

But how do you do that?  How do you discern God’s voice?

With the Word of God

Do not be quick to take action just because “God” has spoken to you.  Learn to measure what you’ve heard with the word of God. Some things may seem to align with the word of God on a surface level, but they may not necessarily be from God.

It is only the word of God that will help you to know if what you heard was from God or not.  The thing is God can never contradict his word, he watches over it.  He is not a man that he should lie nor the son of man that he should forget.  There is no way he’ll tell you something today and change his mind tomorrow. (Jeremiah 1:12)

Through Prayer

Yes, you heard that voice from God, and you’re sure that it is him who has told you to take that next step.  But hold up before you do anything; ask him to confirm his word to you.

If it is from God, he will fill your heart with the peace that surpasses all understanding.  If it is not from him, then you will have a feeling in your heart that something is just not right. Or he will bring his word to your remembrance as you pray to show you if you are on the right track.

Through your spiritual friends

Okay, let’s start by making this clear even your spiritual friends and family can hear the wrong things.  So don’t just rush to them whenever you hear God speak.

Pray about it first, measure what you’ve heard with scripture, and if you still have some doubt you can reach out to a spiritual friend and ask them for guidance.

Sometimes you don’t even have to reach out to them God will use them in his own way to confirm his word. You only need to be willing to listen and to follow through what he’s telling you to do.  Always be alert because your enemy the devil pretends to be the angel of light (2Corinthians 11:14).

He is very cunning, and he can fool you by making you believe that it is God who has told you to do something.  There are also times when we hear our own voice and then claim that it is God speaking to us. So care needs to be taken.

 All in all

Just because something seems right doesn’t mean that it is from God.  You need to measure it against God’s word,  pray about it,  and seek advice from your friend so that you can be sure that it is from God.

Be vigilant in all that you do and make sure that all that you’re doing aligns with the word of God.
