When Worry Won’t Let Go
Maybe your heart is racing right now. Maybe your mind keeps running through every way things could go wrong. Or maybe it is a low, steady worry that follows you from the moment you wake up.
If that is you, take a slow breath. You are not weak, and you are not failing God. Many faithful women carry anxiety, and the Bible speaks to it with real tenderness.
God does not ask you to pretend you are fine. He asks you to hand Him the worry itself.
“Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
That word “casting” means to throw something off of you and onto someone else. You were never meant to hold all of this alone. The reason you can let go is simple: He cares for you.
The prayers below are written for the moments anxiety tends to show up. Some are for the middle of the night. Some are for a panic attack, a doctor’s appointment, a tight budget, or a worried heart for your children. Each one comes with a verse and a few words about what it means for you today.
You do not need perfect words. Find the prayer that fits where you are, and pray it slowly. God is listening.
1. A Prayer for Anxiety and Worry
“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6 to 7
Paul wrote these words while he was in chains. He knew what it was to have every reason to worry. “In nothing” means no worry is too small or too big to bring to God. Notice the thanksgiving too.
Thanking God in the middle of worry reminds your heart of what He has already done. Then His peace stands guard over your heart and mind, like a soldier at a gate.
Heavenly Father, I come to You with a heavy heart and a mind that won’t slow down. You already know every worry I carry, but I bring them to You now, one by one. I lay down my fear about tomorrow.
I lay down the things I cannot fix. Thank You for every time You have carried me before. You have never once let me go. Let Your peace guard my heart and my thoughts today. When worry knocks again, help me bring it straight back to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
2. A Prayer When Anxiety Keeps You Up at Night
“In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me live in safety.” Psalm 4:8
David wrote this psalm while he was in distress. He did not have his problems solved before bedtime. He still chose to lie down in peace, because his safety rested in God, not in his plans.
Night is when worry gets loud. This verse reminds you that you can close your eyes even when life feels unfinished.
Lord, it is late, and my mind is still running. I keep replaying today and worrying about tomorrow. Right now I give You both. You never sleep, so I can. Quiet my racing heart.
Slow my breathing. Cover my home, my family, and my bed with Your peace. Guard my dreams and give my body the rest it needs. When I wake up, let my first thought be of You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If sleep is a regular struggle, this prayer for a good night’s sleep is a good one to keep by your bed.
3. A Prayer for an Anxiety Attack
“In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.” Psalm 94:19
When anxiety hits hard, your thoughts pile up faster than you can sort them. The psalmist felt that too. His answer was not to fight every thought. It was to rest in God’s comfort right in the middle of them. When you can’t think straight, keep your prayer short and simple.
Pray this slowly, one line with each breath.
- Breathe in: Lord, You are here.
- Breathe out: I am safe with You.
- Breathe in: Your peace is mine.
- Breathe out: I let this fear go.
Jesus, calm the storm inside me the way You calmed the sea. Steady my heart. Slow my breathing. Hold me until this passes. I trust You. Amen.
4. A Prayer When Your Thoughts Won’t Stop Racing
“Throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5
Anxiety loves to tell stories that begin with “what if.” What if the test comes back bad? What if they leave? What if I fail? You do not have to believe every thought that comes into your head. Taking a thought captive means you stop it at the door and hold it up to God’s truth before you let it in.
Father, my mind is full of what ifs. I keep picturing things that have not happened and may never happen. Today I bring every one of those thoughts to You.
Show me what is true. Remind me that You are good, in control, and unchanged. When my thoughts start to spiral, help me stop and say Your Word out loud. Fill my mind with what is true, lovely, and full of hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
5. A Prayer for Anxiety and Fear
“Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10
God gives three promises in one verse: He will strengthen you, help you, and hold you up. Fear tells you that you are on your own. God says the opposite. He is with you, He is yours, and His hand is strong enough to carry what you cannot.
God, I am afraid. I don’t fully understand why, and I can’t seem to shake it. But Your Word says I do not have to be afraid, because You are with me. I hold on to that promise right now. Strengthen me where I feel weak.
Help me where I feel stuck. Hold me up where I feel like I am sinking. Replace my fear with a quiet trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

6. A Prayer When You’re Worried About the Future
“‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,’ says the Lord, ‘thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11
God spoke these words to His people while they were far from home, facing a long wait before things would change. He did not promise them a quick fix.
He promised them that His thoughts toward them were good. The same is true for you. You may not see the next chapter yet, but God has already written it with peace and hope.
Lord, I don’t know what is coming, and that scares me. I want answers and a clear plan. Instead, You are asking me to trust You one day at a time. Help me to do that.
Remind me that Your thoughts toward me are good. Take my worry about next month and next year and hold it for me. Give me just enough light for the next step, and the faith to take it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

7. A Prayer When You’re Worried About Your Children
“All your children will be taught by the Lord, and your children’s peace will be great.” Isaiah 54:13
A mother’s worry runs deep. You can’t be with your children every minute, and you can’t protect them from everything. But this verse is a promise that God Himself will teach them. Their peace does not depend on you holding it all together. It rests in the One who loves them even more than you do.
Father, You know how much I love my children, and You know how much I worry about them. I worry about their safety, their choices, their friends, and their future.
I can’t follow them everywhere, but You can. Teach them Your ways. Protect them when I am not there. Draw them close to You. Give them great peace, and give me peace as I trust them into Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

8. A Prayer for Health Anxiety and Waiting on Test Results
“My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26
Few things stir up anxiety like waiting on a doctor’s call. The psalmist was honest that his body and heart could fail. But he did not stop there. He named God as his strength and his portion. Whatever the results say, God is still yours, and He is still enough.
Lord, I am waiting, and the waiting is hard. Every time my phone rings, my heart jumps. I don’t know what the doctors will say, but I know who You are.
You are my strength when my body feels weak. Calm my mind while I wait. Guide every doctor and every test. Whatever the answer is, help me face it with You beside me. I trust my health and my life to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

9. A Prayer When Money Worries Weigh You Down
“See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they?” Matthew 6:26
Jesus pointed to the birds on purpose. They don’t have savings accounts or backup plans, yet they never go a day without God’s care. If He watches over them, He will watch over you. This does not mean bills disappear. It means you are not facing them alone.
Father, the bills are piling up, and I don’t see how it all gets paid. I feel the weight of it every day. Remind me that You know exactly what I need.
Give me wisdom with what I have. Open doors I can’t see yet. Help me to be faithful and to trust You with what I can’t control. You have provided before, and I believe You will again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

10. A Prayer for Stress and Anxiety
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
Stress and anxiety often show up together. Your to do list keeps growing, and your peace keeps shrinking. Jesus does not ask you to finish everything before you come to Him. He says come as you are, tired and overloaded, and He will give you rest.
Jesus, I am worn out. There is too much on my plate and not enough of me to go around. I come to You just as I am. Take the weight I have been carrying. Show me what truly matters today and what can wait.
Give my body rest and my mind peace. Help me remember that I don’t have to do it all to be loved by You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

11. A Morning Prayer When You Wake Up Anxious
“It is because of the Lord’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassions don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22 to 23
Some mornings the worry is there before your feet hit the floor. Jeremiah wrote these words after watching his city fall. Even in that pain, he found something that had not changed: God’s mercy, fresh every single morning. Today’s mercy is already waiting for you.
Good morning, Lord. I woke up with worry already sitting on my chest. Before I check my phone or start my day, I turn to You. Thank You that Your mercy is new this morning.
Thank You that I don’t have to carry yesterday into today. Walk with me through every hour. When anxiety rises, remind me that You are faithful. I give You this day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

12. A Prayer for a Friend Facing Anxiety
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
Sometimes the person struggling is not you. It is your sister, your friend, or your daughter. Praying for her is one of the most loving ways to help carry her burden. You don’t need to fix her anxiety. You just need to bring her to Jesus.
Dear Heavenly Father, I lift up my dear friend who is struggling with anxiety. You know her heart and every worry she carries. Help her know that You are in control and that You will not let her out of Your sight.
Replace every fear in her mind with hope. Bring healing and relief to her during this hard time, and comfort her with Your presence. Remind her that You will never leave her nor forsake her.
And Lord, help me be a voice of wisdom and kindness in her life. Help me point her to You. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Prayer for Anxiety
Is it a sin to feel anxious?
No. Feeling anxious is not a sin. It is part of being human in a broken world. Even Jesus told His friends in the garden that His soul was deeply troubled. The Bible’s invitation is not “stop feeling this.” It is “bring this to God.” Anxiety becomes a chance to lean on Him.
What does the Bible say about anxiety?
The Bible speaks to anxiety many times. Philippians 4:6 to 7 tells us to pray about everything and promises God’s peace in return. Matthew 6:34 tells us not to be anxious about tomorrow. 1 Peter 5:7 invites us to cast every worry on God because He cares for us. Again and again, God answers fear with His presence.
Can prayer help during an anxiety attack?
Yes. Short, simple prayers work best when anxiety is intense. Try pairing a few words with your breathing, like the breath prayer in prayer #3 above. Slowing your breath and focusing on one truth about God can help calm your body and your mind.
Should a Christian see a doctor or counselor for anxiety?
Yes, and there is no shame in it. Prayer and professional help work together. God often brings healing through doctors, counselors, and medicine, just as He does through His Word.
If anxiety is affecting your sleep, work, or relationships, talk with your doctor or a Christian counselor. If you ever have thoughts of hurting yourself, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the US.
What is a short prayer for anxiety and worry?
Here is one you can pray anytime: “Lord, I give You this worry. I can’t carry it, but You can. Fill me with Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.” You’ll find more in the short prayers section above.
A Closing Prayer for Peace
Father, thank You for meeting me right here, in the middle of my worry. You are not surprised by my fear, and You are not tired of hearing about it.
I give You every anxious thought, every what if, and every heavy feeling I have been carrying. Guard my heart and my mind with Your peace. Remind me each day that You are with me, You are for me, and You will never let me go. I rest in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Anxiety may come back tomorrow, and that is okay. Every time it does, you can come back to this page and pray again. God’s peace is not a one time gift. It is new every morning.
