Before You Go
Whether you are packing the car for Grandma’s house, boarding a plane, or watching someone you love pull out of the driveway, travel has a way of stirring up worry. So much is out of your hands. The weather, the traffic, the other drivers, the delays.
But nothing is out of God’s hands.
“He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber.” Psalm 121:3
God does not doze off while you are on the road. He sees every mile, every runway, and every turn. You can pray before you leave, pray on the way, and thank Him when you arrive.
The prayers below are for every kind of trip. Pick the one that fits, or pray them all.
1. A Prayer for Safe Travel
“The Lord will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.” Psalm 121:7 to 8
This psalm was sung by travelers on their way up to Jerusalem. The roads were long and dangerous, and they reminded each other that God was watching. “Your going out and your coming in” covers the whole trip, from the moment you leave until the moment you walk back through your door.
Heavenly Father, I place this trip in Your hands. Watch over my going out and my coming in. Keep me and everyone traveling with me safe from harm. Guard our path, our vehicle, and our hearts. Give us peace on the journey and joy when we arrive. Bring us home safely. Thank You for being the God who never sleeps. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
2. A Prayer Before You Leave Home
“He said, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’” Exodus 33:14
Moses did not want to take one step forward without God. This was God’s answer. You are not leaving God behind when you lock the front door. His presence goes with you, and He promises rest along the way.
Lord, before I walk out this door, I invite You to come with me. Go before me and behind me. Watch over my home while I am gone. Calm the rush and the stress of getting out the door. Let Your presence fill this trip from the first mile to the last. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
3. A Prayer for a Road Trip
“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:6
Long drives can be tiring and unpredictable. This verse is a promise for the road. When you invite God into every part of the trip, He guides your way. That includes the highway, the detours, and the rest stops.
Lord, I acknowledge You on this road today. Keep the driver alert and focused. Give clear vision and quick reactions. Protect us from careless drivers, bad roads, and car trouble. Lead us around danger, even when we don’t know it is there. Keep our hearts light and our conversation kind. Bring us safely to where we are going. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
4. A Prayer for Flying
“If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.” Psalm 139:9 to 10
There is no place too high or too far for God’s hand to reach. Thirty thousand feet in the air, you are still held. If flying makes you nervous, this verse is a good one to pray as the plane takes off.
God, as I board this plane, I trust You to hold me. Give the pilots wisdom and steady hands. Bless the crew and everyone who keeps this plane safe. Give us smooth skies and a safe landing. If fear rises in me, calm my heart and remind me that Your hand is right here. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If flying stirs up worry, this prayer for anxiety may help too.
5. A Prayer for Travel Mercies and Protection
“For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:11
Christians have prayed for “travel mercies” for generations. It simply means asking for God’s kindness and protection on the road. This verse promises that God sends His angels to guard you wherever you go.
Father, I ask for Your travel mercies today. Send Your angels to guard us in all our ways. Protect us from accidents, delays, and anything that would harm us. Cover our vehicle, our bags, and our bodies with Your protection. Let us travel under Your shadow and arrive in peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

6. A Prayer for a Loved One Who Is Traveling
“The Lord bless you, and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24 to 26
It can be harder to watch someone you love leave than to travel yourself. You can’t control the trip, but you can cover it in prayer. This blessing is one God gave His people to speak over each other. Pray it over the one you love as they go.
Lord, I lift up ________ as they travel today. Bless them and keep them. Shine Your face on them. Be gracious to them on every road and in every airport. Guard them from harm, and give them peace. Bring them safely to where they are going, and bring them safely back home to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
7. A Prayer for Traveling With Kids
“The Lord himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8
Traveling with children brings its own kind of stress. Snacks, bathroom stops, car seats, and tired little ones. God goes before you on this trip too. He sees the meltdowns and the long lines, and He promises not to leave you.
Father, go before our family on this trip. Keep our children safe and healthy. Give them patience in the car and on the plane, and give me patience too. Help us laugh more than we fuss. Protect every one of us, and let this trip become a happy memory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
8. A Prayer for Your Child Who Is Driving
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.” Psalm 32:8
Few things test a mother’s faith like handing over the car keys. Whether it is a new teen driver or a grown child driving home for the holidays, this verse is a promise. God’s eye is on them every mile.
Lord, I give You my child as they drive today. Keep their eyes on the road and their mind clear. Help them make wise choices and stay focused. Protect them from other drivers and from danger they can’t see. Keep Your eye on them every mile, and bring them home safely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

9. A Prayer for Holiday Travel
“Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
Holiday travel means crowded highways, packed airports, and a long list of plans. It also means time with the people you love. God promises to be with you wherever you go, including the busiest travel days of the year.
Lord, as we travel for the holidays, keep us safe on crowded roads and in busy airports. Help us stay calm when there are delays. Give us grace for every person we meet along the way. Let our time together be full of peace, and bring every family member safely to the table and safely home again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
10. A Prayer for Safe Travel and Good Weather
“He makes the storm a calm, so that its waves are still.” Psalm 107:29
Weather can change a trip fast. Storms, ice, and fog are all out of our control, but not out of God’s. The same God who calmed the sea can calm the skies over your route.
God, You rule the wind and the rain. I ask for clear skies and safe roads for this trip. If storms come, give us wisdom to know when to wait and when to go. Calm any weather that would put us in danger. Help me trust Your timing instead of worrying about the forecast. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
11. A Prayer for a Mission Trip
“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!” Romans 10:15
A mission trip is travel with a purpose. You are carrying the love of Jesus to people who need it. God calls those traveling feet beautiful, and He goes with you to every place He sends you.
Lord, thank You for sending me on this trip. Keep our team safe as we travel. Give us health, energy, and unity. Open doors for Your love to be shared. Prepare the hearts of the people we will meet. Let everything we do point back to You. Bring us home safely with full hearts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

12. A Prayer of Thanks for Arriving Safely
“Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.” Psalm 107:30
When the trip is over and you finally arrive, don’t forget to say thank you. God brought you to your “desired haven.” A short prayer of thanks honors Him for every mile He watched over.
Thank You, Lord, for bringing us here safely. Thank You for every mile You protected and every danger You kept from us that we never even saw. Thank You for the people we get to see and the rest we get to enjoy. When it is time to go home, go with us again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
